last night was my 38th birthday bash and i hafta say it went better than i expected. I'd been a little uninspired to say the least about the prospect of turning 38. It's not exactly a signature number, a number to get excited by. It passes that satisfying midway point between 35 and 40, hell, the reality is here: 40 is now the next big one. Coupled with the lingering effects of a cold i was feeling tired and that the numbers supposedly coming had exceeded what i wanted- something low key.
Turns out it was a great night really- god i love my friends, theyre such a bunch of well adjusted easy-to-get-on-with types. i felt "hey, i'm doin alright if THESE people want to hang out with me". So bunny and myself played a few mario kart races- it never fails to get me going. He'd brought some champagne "NOT CAVA!" which sure made for bad driving, and he did the cooking, which allowed me to get ready.
So we started out in Bar 38, my little joke. I got a great book about amsterdam from verity, some cold hard cash from Thomas and Bunny, which made me feel mercenary as hell but itll help go towards Johns prezzie, namely the shades. We're gonna get some shades in San Fran, what w/ the exchange rate being as it is now its too good to pass up. Bunny also gave me a celebrity magazine from 1969 which i thought was brilliant- he'd been worried that the man who ditched his entire star wars comics collection from the 70's would in no way want a vintage mag. He was so wrong- not only was it a really sweet gesture its cool! Its instructive to see that even the sleb media from the 60s were just as intrusive "Liz Taylor could be a cripple!!"
Anyway we had to get a shift on because the next venue will charge a hefty £5 per head if you miss yer slot- that bar being cloud 23 in the Hilton. Its such a good option for birthdays when you dont know what u want to do- just the right touch of glamour and some pretty hot men to boot. I could maybe have done with not getting into a LOONG conversation with the woman also celebrating her birthday . It was ok to start with till she launched into a very long discussion re. her many attempts to stop office buildings being built in her neighbourhood. Yawn! Planning permissions and civic protests- not birthday subjects in my book.
Anyway, apart from that i did a good job mingling and talked to just about everybody- apart from alf who i see every day at work so thats ok and julia, lovely lovely julia, who i dont get to see that much. So thats not ok. How i love julia- she's such a gentle considerate and special person. she's one of a kind. I have nothing but good things to say about her.
So we stayed pretty late. id had a good turnout and a second candle bedecked birthday cake so cant grumble...
anyway, i best getback to work...
